Steward Health Care Adds Joe Deschryver As South Regional President

DeSchryver – a 20-year industry veteran – to oversee Steward Health Care operations across Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Arkansas

DALLAS (June 21, 2021) – Steward Health Care, the nation’s largest physician-owned and -led healthcare network, has added Joe DeSchryver as Regional President, Steward Health Care, South Region.

DeSchryver brings 20 years of experience operating acute care hospitals and affiliated entities to Steward, where he’ll oversee operations across Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Arkansas, which currently accounts for 12 of Steward’s 34 U.S.-based hospitals. He most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of the multi-campus Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, Calif., having previously held additional leadership roles at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and West Boca Medical Center, among others. He holds an MBA from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, as well as his MHSA from Arizona State University and Bachelor of Science degree in Public Policy from the University of Southern California.

“Joe brings an extraordinary level of expertise to Steward’s regional leadership team, with a proven track record of bringing together independent practices, physicians, staff leaders and other partners to improve patient care and drive value,” said Sanjay Shetty, MD, President, Steward North America. “Steward’s entrepreneurial culture is a direct reflection of our physician ownership, and we know that Joe’s energy and passion for the healthcare industry will have an immediate, positive impact on our team as well as our patients.”

In addition to recently announcing its plan to acquire five hospitals in South Florida, Steward Health Care last month announced it would soon break ground on a new $227 million Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Tex., just northwest of its current 120-year-old facility that serves the flourishing Ark-La-Tex region. The Dallas-based organization also recently kicked off a $92 million renovation project at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Houston and has invested $14 million in improvements to Odessa Regional Medical Center. Steward’s other South Region initiatives include the recent rebrand of Southwest General Hospital in San Antonio to Texas Vista Medical Center, coinciding with a first-of-its-kind Healthy Horizons program to improve the long-term health of the local community, and technology upgrades at Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring, as well as the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, with locations in Port Arthur and Beaumont.

“Steward’s unique physician leadership model is already paying off for its southern region, with strategic growth initiatives and significant investments made to enhance both the patient and provider experience, including a new Wadley Regional Medical Center soon breaking ground in Texarkana and nearly $100 million in renovations at Houston’s first hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center,” said DeSchryver. “What an invigorating opportunity to join Steward at the critical starting point of these many exciting transitions and see them through to fruition.”
